How to maximize your comfort: the private jet edition
F/List's design team is exploring the final frontier in aircraft interiors: extra space. Head of Innovation, Melanie Prince, explains that the inspiration for this project came during the pandemic when they asked themselves how can they do it with less. The answer? The Shapeshifter concept is a cutting-edge business-jet interior technology that utilizes electromechanical sleight of hand to morph, bend, and stretch. After three years in development, the prototype space, which is still in the conceptual stage, is designed to maximize the passenger experience through multifunctional furniture. The concept includes a credenza that can transform into a workstation and seating-and-table configurations that can change on the fly.
F/List has grander plans for making the cabin more versatile, starting with the entrance. According to Melanie Prince, head of innovation for the Austrian atelier, passengers typically pass straight by the galley when boarding. However, F/List has developed a space that can expand on the ground, creating a cozy nook where an attendant can offer a gift or a glass of Champagne.
And what comes after gift-giving? Once the plane takes off, sensors, actuators, and pneumatic elements enable the galley to transform again. However, those few inches can make a significant difference when needed. Shapeshifting can also enhance the primary cabin area. With the touch of a button, the aircraft owner can convert the space from a relaxed workspace or socializing area into a formal dining setting. As with the entrance, the space literally changes: the low-sitting lounges rise to become high-backed seating, while a multi-piece platform emerges from the lounge and extends across the cabin to create a full dining table. Another button push and—voilà—the dining area vanishes, returning to its previous configuration.
