The summertime isn't always great for new movies, but don't worry, we’ve done the research and have you totally covered. As it happens, July 2022 is shaping up to be a pretty good month for cinema. We've scoured the listings to find the best Sci-Fi, action, comedy, and offbeat gems for you to enjoy while the sun shines. So, get your popcorn ready and check out our top-rated picks.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Thor: Love and Thunder is the biggest, although possibly not the best of the July releases. The latest Thor flick continues on the current Marvel theme of keeping the Thunder God movies light-hearted and comedic. If you’ve been enjoying the comic relief provided by Thor in his most recent incarnation as a Marvel screen hero then you won’t want to miss this one. Chris Hemsworth continues to be synonymous with the Nordic deity turned superhero.
Thor has lapsed into a life of mundane pleasure, but faced with a new threat from Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale) to wipe out the entire race of gods, he must return to the spotlight and save the day. Korg and Valkyrie are recruited into the epic struggle and Natalie Portman is back as Jane Foster, Thor’s original love interest.
Definitely worth a watch in our opinion.

Nope
The latest directorial offering from Jordan Peele of Key and Peele fame, Nope looks to be a very solid offering in the Sci-Fi, mystery, and horror genres. We all know Jordan from his comedy duo success but he is also an accomplished director, most notably of the 2017 thriller-horror flick Get Out. Nope is set in rural California and centers around an eerie phenomenon hovering in the sky above a lonely ranch.
The movie builds in tension, maintaining a sense of mystery and increasing dread as the true nature of the phenomenon becomes more clear. True to form, there is plenty of comic relief in this Peele production, so if you love Sci-Fi suspense and the comedy of Key and Peele, this pick is a surefire hit for you this summer.

American Carnage
"No one escapes the daily grind." This thriller-comedy starts with an executive order to detain all undocumented youths in the state. The detainees are given a choice of either being deported or volunteering their time inside a care facility for the elderly. With plenty of comic relief along the way, the true nature of what is happening inside the care home goes from plain old creepy to a full-on horror thriller with special effects to match.
If you’re into survival scenarios about hordes of twisted mindless assailants in a confined space (think zombies for a good comparison), then you will love this new offering from writer-director Jesse Stewart.
- Release Date: July 15th, 2022.
Vengeance
We are definitely excited about this one. The directorial debut of B.J. Novak of The Office fame is a hilarious combination of dark comedy, conspiracy, and plain old small town USA thriller. Full of quirky dialogue, one-liners, and great acting, the premise is an original twist on the urbanite meets conspiracy redneck theme.
This movie is not what you expect and updates the genre with some very meta themes, including a podcaster who seeks to prove that all conspiracy theories are an attempt to block out truths that are too painful to accept. That is until he finds himself personally involved in some very weird scenarios.
If you liked Novak in The Office and you love a good conspiracy theory thriller, be sure to check out Vengeance this month.

The Royal
This feel-good movie based on a true story is a must if you are into baseball and redemption stories. Willie Mays Aikens was an up-and-coming slugger for the Kansas City Royals when substance abuse made his life and career go off the rails. After a long spell in the pen, his real struggle begins with his freedom and the mountain he must climb to rebuild his career and reconnect with his family.
Written by Gregory W. Jordan and directed by Marcel Sarmiento, this promises to be an inspirational and blockbusting movie about overcoming the odds. Definitely worth checking out in our opinion.

Hot Seat
"No time to think. Nowhere to run. One chance to live." Blockbusting, Oscar-winning, controversy-courting Aussie legend Mel Gibson is back again. Whatever you may think of Mel’s off-screen antics, you have to acknowledge his talent as both an actor and a director.
In this cyber-thriller, Mel plays a bomb disposal expert with nerves of steel. He is called to the scene when an IT expert finds a hair-trigger explosive attached to his office chair. An unknown assailant has issued him with an ultimatum to steal funds online or lose his daughter. This one will be available on various streaming platforms and is one to watch out for if you love suspense, cyber-thrills, explosives, and the inimitable Mel Gibson.
