The dystopian thriller series hit the screen in September 2021 and it immediately became Netflix’s no. 1 must-see show in more than 90 nations. It is, so far, the famous platform’s most thriving non-English show, and things don't end here. Because it also evolved into Netflix's biggest ever series launch, overtaking Bridgerton. Plus, the hashtag #squidgame had over 27.5 billion views on TikTok almost instantly, in just a few weeks. Now, that’s something.
What's so special about the series, anyway? Lovers of Squid Game recognized that what caught their attention most was the disturbing plot: 465 people, all of them with severe debt problems, competing in six children’s games for 6 days, for the big prize: £28 million. What happens to those who lose is where the show gets interesting, because the majority of the characters suffer rather gory deaths. In the meantime, as a spectator, you can become obsessed with the characters and most of all, mad about the open-ending of the show.
Not even 2 months after the first season, people went crazy with the Halloween costumes, and the Squid Game-inspired characters have reached no. 1 on Google's top-trending rankings. It was so popular that three primary schools in New York concluded in banning Halloween costumes inspired by the show. Netflix commissioned a big replica of the disturbing Red Light, Green Light doll from episode one to overlook Sydney, Australia. Isn't that creepy? A few months later, YouTube star MrBeast built a real-life interpretation of the play and asked 456 random participants to enter a contest offering a £342,000 cash prize for the champion. Luckily, none of the YouTuber's participants ended up being hurt during the game. What is more, they obtained a specific amount of cash for participating.
So, if you're a big fan of Squid Game, we've got some good news: because it's official, season 2 is on its way to Netflix and your home. In June 2022, a post communicated via the series' official Twitter page stated: "On your marks. Get set. Greenlight." This isn’t really a surprise for anyone, let’s be honest, because Ted Sarandos, Netflix CEO, said that there are plans for a second season of the show in January 2022, which could also include live performances, mobile gaming, and more merchandise. He confessed that the Squid Game universe has just started and that the producers are slowly but steadily creating more content, expanding to new mobile horizons.
Later that year, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk told Associated Press that he confirms new episodes of Squid Game were on their way to see the light of day very soon. When would Squid Game season two be released? With a second season already commissioned, fans are hoping that the Squid Game team gets to finish it pretty soon. People are waiting impatiently. At the same time, it's probable that you won't see it already on your screen. At this year's Critics Choice Awards, Hwang Dong-hyuk informed Variety that the season two script is not yet finished.
The creator also suggested that Seong Gi-hun will definitely be back in the show. If you remember it correctly, you probably first heard about the Squid Game in 2019, but it took two years for filming and production to finish up. Which can only mean that you're very likely to see the new season in late 2023 or early 2024. Can't wait! Another important aspect is the show's awards victory. Because actor O Yeong-su won Best Supporting Actor in Television at the Golden Globe for his role as Player 001 in season one. This marks the first time ever that a Korean actor wins a Golden Globe award. We say keep 'em' coming! The actor also talked about some fan theories regarding season two after many viewers have assumed her character Kang Saebyeok might have survived. In a YouTube video with Vanity Fair, the actor discredited the ideas noticed on Reddit. First and foremost, the actor disputed a Reddit suggestion that her character's little brother Cheoul could enter the game to avenge her death. As to the buzzes that 001 is 456's father given the latest disapproval and that he and 001's son have the same birthday, HoYeon answered that this could make sense, but that would be even more stressful to watch. And viewers don't need more reasons for being uncomfortable and stressed. In the meantime, the actor dismissed gossip her character outlived the rest of them at the end of the first season. She declared she also hopes her character to save herself, but also that she would be ok if her character didn't survive.
