How to get inspired by the best looks of style icon Travis Scott

Although Kendrick Lamar reigns as the current hip-hop king, Travis Scott, who supported Lamar on his highly successful Damn tour, leads the genre's fashion scene. The 26-year-old Texan rapper, already boasting a US number-one album and set to release one of the most highly anticipated albums of the year, has gained notoriety for his sense of style, which has helped him conquer the fashion world in addition to his music career. While his high-profile relationship with Kylie Jenner, the youngest self-made billionaire ever, may have contributed to his fame, Scott's emerging fashion sense has undoubtedly played a role as well.

What’s more, Travis Scott, a regular on the front rows of fashion week, has collaborated with several fashion labels, including Helmut Lang and Maharishi - a brand he loves for their cargo pants, a style that Maharishi practically invented. Additionally, he has been the face of Saint Laurent for their SS17 campaign, cementing his presence in the fashion world.

But why has Travis Scott become such a sought-after fashion icon? It's not just his massive social media following (over 10 million on Instagram) or his undeniable influence on youth culture. It's also his unique take on streetwear, which impresses at every turn. Here are some examples that will inspire your future outfits!

Cargo pants & Vans

He often sports a plaid overshirt and cargo pants that nod to his grunge roots. Rather than traditional tailoring, he opts for blazers with rock-and-roll details, like a tightly cinched waist and gold buttons. On his feet, you'll usually see him in either Vans or high tops, with the laces undone for that cool, effortless look.

All black elements

Menswear enthusiasts often ask, how can you wear all black without looking like you’re dressed for a school play? The answer is simple: variation. By incorporating different cuts, textures, and shades of black, you can create a stylish and diverse look. Travis Scott exemplifies this with his outfit, which includes a military-style blazer with metallic buttons, paired with trousers featuring shiny hoops down the sides. The combination of these elements breaks up the all-black look and adds interest and dimension to the outfit.

Layering expertise

When it comes to layering looks, hoodies are a versatile piece that can complement a statement bomber jacket without stealing the show, and also add volume to slimmer silhouettes. However, pairing black with the wrong shade of blue can be a challenge. While a dark navy can appear lackluster, an electric blue can create a striking contrast against the black, especially when incorporating contrasting textures like satin and denim.

Gothic style

At his first red-carpet appearance with Kylie Jenner, at the MET gala, Travis Scott's outfit was relatively reserved compared to others on the guest list that night. While we don't expect anyone to wear the gothic space captain look in everyday life, we do appreciate the clean and sharp cut of Scott's outfit, with no unsightly bunching, and the utility belt worn over the shoulder to break up the all-black.

90s hip-hop

Travis Scott also has another outfit that incorporates a hint of dad-core and heavily relies on the bright and gaudy color schemes of early 90s hip-hop. The revival of looser and baggier fits in menswear is evident, but you wouldn't want to look like you're draped in sheets. For light-wash denim, follow Scott's lead and opt for a fit that's between skinny and loose, with a slight taper in the jeans to ensure your favorite Vans don't get concealed.

Leather fashion

Leather trousers may not be the easiest clothing item to pull off as you get older, but they can be a fun experiment in your younger years. However, it's important to keep in mind some style guidelines, such as avoiding all-leather outfits that can lead to overheating. A good option is pairing leather trousers with a classic and timeless suede jacket, along with a non-flashy black tee and white sneakers to keep the overall look balanced.

Utilitarian workwear

Travis Scott stays true to his brand with this outfit, and while we're not sure about the practicality of those Supreme shades, the grey chore jacket and trousers combo is a utilitarian workwear wonder. The key is to go for a relaxed fit - the workwear aesthetic is meant to be functional and not constricting. As for the socks and sandals trend, we've had a change of heart and are starting to accept it as has the fashion world, but it's best to opt for high-end options like Scott's Yves Saint Laurent pair. And please, keep the color neutral.
