From avant-garde creations pushing technological boundaries to lovingly crafted updates of iconic models, brands tested boundaries and paid homage to traditions. Blancpain Fifty Fathoms

Dive watches have a long history, but one of the true originals is considered to be the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. Debuting in 1953, it was arguably the first modern diving timepiece. With water resistance to 50 fathoms or 300 feet, it achieved this feat through a double-gasket crown and a robust 42mm steel casing designed by Blancpain CEO Jean-Jacques Fiechter, an avid scuba diver himself. In September of this year, Blancpain unveiled the latest iteration celebrating the 70th anniversary of the Fifty Fathoms line. 

TAG Heuer Carrera

2023 marked the 60th anniversary of the legendary Heuer Carrera chronograph, the first timepiece introduced when Jack Heuer took over the family business in 1963. To honor this milestone, the watch unveiled a collection paying homage to the iconic Carrera's racing heritage. Introduced in the spring, the new line featured design cues evoking automotive inspiration, just as the original did decades ago. However, Heuer also introduced modern innovations, such as a box of sapphire crystal wrapping around the entire case to maximize readability. 

Bell & Ross Military 

Bell & Ross watches often excel with their simple yet impactful designs. At the core of the brand's aesthetic is the recognizable circular watch face set within a square casing, taking inspiration from aircraft cockpit instruments. A newly introduced piece for 2023 embraces this functional design language while exuding stealthy military flair. Housed in a sturdy black ceramic case, it features an understated matte olive green dial and black indexes and hands.

Zenith Chronomaster Sport

Zenith recently debuted a collaborative timepiece with Aaron Rodgers, building upon the Chronomaster Sport platform. The 41mm stainless steel chronograph houses Zenith's legendary updated El Primero automatic chronograph caliber, a movement first introduced in 1969. However, what immediately catches the eye is the vibrant shade of electric green used for the bezel and dial - a nod to Rodgers' uniform colors as quarterback for the New York Jets. 

Panerai Radiomir

One of Panerai's most striking releases in 2023 was an unofficial dial version of the Radiomir in stainless steel. The Tre Giorni model houses an in-house 72-hour power reserve, accounting for its name translating to "three days." Rolex Oyster Perpetual 
Rolex delivered several unexpected yet delightful tweaks to some of its most legendary designs in 2023. However, no watch generated as much excitement and buzz as the "Celebration" dial variant of the 41mm Oyster Perpetual. The dial pays homage to Rolex's vibrantly hued modern dial colors through 51 mini enamel circles showcasing each hue – a breakthrough departure from their usual aesthetic. 

IWC Ingenieur

While best known for its pilot and driver-inspired watch designs, IWC provided a fascinating reexamination of one of its most fundamental models in 2023. Revisiting the Ingenieur, a design dating back to 1955, when it debuted IWC's first in-house automatic caliber and implemented anti-magnetism protection through a soft metal Faraday cage. However, what makes this special edition particularly appealing is its case shape. Established dive watch conventions are challenged by Longines' fresh perspective on history with the Legend Diver. Grand Seiko 44GS

Perhaps Japan's most famous watchmaker and a brand rapidly cultivating devoted affection, this model delights with pieces balancing daily wearability and showstopper quality. A new USA-exclusive model - fittingly sized at the in-vogue 36mm - is the 44GS, drawing inspiration from a 1967 prototype. With a verdant green dial textured to reference the foliage surrounding Mount Iwate, a Japanese peak given Grand Seiko's Studio Shizukuishi, it seamlessly marries function and aesthetic.
