And the best way to do it is perhaps by visiting spooky locations around the world and creepy places that once have been haunted - or still are. So join us in this virtual tour of creepy locations from forests to bridges and abandoned prisons. Prepare your bags and get ready for some real horror stories this year.

Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia

Famous for its notorious inmates like Al Capone and Wilpe Sutton - the famous bank robber - Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia has a reputation when it comes to paranormal activity. Did you know that it's also famous for the introduction of solitary confinement as a punishment for inmates? Many have reported in the past that there are ghostly activities ever since the 1940s. It is known that shadowy figures who disappear when approached exist there, and also ghost faces in some of the cell blocks. Some did even hear an eerie laugh originating from a cell block.

Delphine LaLaurie Mansion, New Orleans

The renowned villa in the heart of Louisiana was the home of serial killer Madame Delphine LaLaurie in the 1830s. Her history is known today through the help of the show American Horror Story, where LaLaurie’s home is a strong favorite for seeing fans desiring to discover the gruesome stories of the villa's secret agony room. You might even see ghostly appearances at the windows and haunting screams.

The Old Changi Hospital, Singapore

This old hospital was transformed into a prison and torture camp by the Japanese private police during the second world war. Experts say that its gruesome history was kept secret for many years, even after it was renewed. But it closed its doors in 1997 and it became a haunted place. Local reports say that an old man is walking the halls, women are staying in the decaying spaces and Japanese soldiers that are full of blood are wandering in the hospital.

Hoia Forest, Romania

You already know that forests are known for being super creepy, but imagine one forest in Transylvania. Yes, it is absolutely haunted, and locals call it the ‘Bermuda Triangle of Romania.’ This is because of the unsolved mysteries and disappearances that have been happening in the area. Legend has it that the forest is haunted by people that were killed here a few hundred years before. But this is a special forest since it's also famous for a number of reports about paranormal activity like UFOs, missing people, and abnormal electrical events.

Corvin Castle, Transylvania

This castle sits in the heart of Romania, Transylvania, and it has an extremely horror history. Here, Vlad the Impaler often called the original Dracula, did all his cruel killings by impaling numerous victims on the spikes around the castle. Legend says that he persisted in his fetish even while he was imprisoned after falling from the top, and he was stabbing rats in his cell.

Poveglia, Venice

Visit an amazing location in Italy, the island of Poveglia: you will be surprised by its story because it has long been abandoned and sold for just £400,000. Wondering why? Well, after being used as a quarantine island for victims of the plague in the late 1700s, it evolved into a mental asylum in the 20th century. There was a doctor here that tortured and slaughtered his patients before finally committing suicide. So, after his death, the establishment shut down and the island was abandoned.

Island of the Dolls, Mexico

This is an artificial island in Mexico City, converted into a nightmare by its previous owner, Jupan Santana Barrera. This guy found a little girl who drowned in the canal and hung her doll in a tree. He felt like he was haunted by her death, so he continued to search for dolls and doll parts and put them on the island because he thought that it would make the little girl happy. Unfortunately, Barrera drowned in 2001 in the canal where the little girl died.

Tower of London, UK

When you think about it, millions of people cross it every week without even knowing its true history. Because the Tower of London has a long story of gruesome events. For a few hundred years, it was used as a prison and torture chamber for traitors. Today, this is one of the most visited places in the world. But the most notorious faces to haunt the tower of London are Anne Boleyn and Henry VI - their ghosts - who are walking the hallways.

Alcatraz, San Francisco

Often known as ‘The Rock’, Alcatraz Island was earlier the location of the  Penitentiary, most renowned for being the world’s most secured prison. Here, Al Capone was imprisoned for more than four years. This prison's history also has multiple escape attempts, although none of them were successful. However, three prisoners implicated in the most well-known attempt were never captured, supposed to have drowned in the gulf. Even today, the troubled souls of its infamous convicts are told to plague the cells.
